The Foreign Ministry summoned the Bulgarian Ambassador to Russia, Atanas Krystin, and handed him a note declaring one of the staff of the country's embassy persona non grata in Moscow, the foreign ministry said in a statement.

“This measure is a response to the <…> the Bulgarian side's unmotivated decision to declare a diplomat of the Russian Embassy in Sofia persona non grata, — said in the message.

On the same day, the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Romania to Russia, Cristian Istrate, was summoned to the ministry, he was also handed a note saying that ten employees of the diplomatic mission of the state in Moscow were declared persona non grata. This is a symmetrical measure in response to the expulsion of ten Russian diplomats from Bucharest in April, the ministry said.

“The Russian side resolutely rejects the groundless attempts of the Romanian side to unfoundedly lay the blame for war crimes in Ukraine on Russia,” —

On March 18, Bulgaria declared ten Russian diplomats persona non grata, as, according to local authorities, they were engaged in work incompatible with their status. Before that, on March 2, two more Russian diplomats were expelled from the country, who were suspected of espionage. The government refused to expel Russian Ambassador Eleonora Mitrofanov because of the risk of breaking off diplomatic relations.

The Russian Foreign Ministry called “an outright provocation” actions of the Bulgarian side. The official representative of the department, Maria Zakharova, said that all the expulsions of Russian diplomats “staged” Washington, and promised a response. On April 8, the ministry declared two Bulgarian diplomats persona non grata, and ten days later expelled several more employees of Bulgarian diplomatic missions. The ministry did not name the exact number of exiled diplomats.

Romania decided to expel ten employees of Russian diplomatic missions on April 5. Toga in the country's Foreign Ministry said that their activities “contradict the provisions of the Vienna Convention on the Diplomatic Service of 1961.” The department did not specify what specific violations are in question.
